Zhu Fu was the younger brother of Zhu Gui, and he ran a restaurant. Zhu Gui (朱贵 was a character in the Water Margin, being one of the 72 Earthly Fiends. He learnt martial arts from Li Yun and was one of Li's favourite students. Li Yun (李云 is a character in the Water Margin. Li Yun came from the same province as the Zhu brothers ( Zhu Gui and Zhu Fu) He was nicknamed 'Smiling tiger' (笑面虎).
Once, Zhu Gui was put in charge of looking out for Li Kui, who had gone home to fetch his mother to Liangshan, as Song Jiang was worried that Li Kui might run into trouble. Li Kui (李逵 was a character in the Chinese folklore novel Water Margin. Song Jiang (宋江 was the leader of a bandit group in the 12th century, during the Song Dynasty. As expected that he would run into some trouble, Li Kui was made drunk by Lord Cao and captured after he killed the imposter Li Gui and the four tigers which devoured his mother. Li Yun, a constable at that time, was assigned to escort Li Kui as a prisoner to the county office. Zhu Fu and his brother heard of Li Yun's prowess in combat and knew it would be hard to rescue Li Kui by force, so they came up with a plan. The Zhu brothers prepared some food and wine which had been drugged, and waited for Li Yun and his party to pass by. Then, they pretended to serve Li Yun and his men with the food and wine, and freed Li Kui after Li Yun and his men were knocked out.
After being freed, Li Kui killed Lord Cao and Li Yun's men and wanted to kill Li Yun as well, but Zhu Fu stopped him, telling that Li Yun was a man of valour and righteousness. Then, they escaped, but Li Yun regained consciousness a while later and caught up with them. Li Kui and Li Yun fought for a short while and was eventually stopped by Zhu Fu. Zhu Fu managed to persuade Li Yun to join the Liangshan band.
Zhu Fu became in charge of brewing wine for Liangshan and participated in the campaigns as well after the heroes had obtained amnesty from the emperor. During the Fang La campaign, some of the heroes fell ill after the battle of Hangzhou and Zhu Fu was assigned to stay back and look after them. Fang Xi (方腊 was a rebel in the Song Dynasty and also a nemesis of the 108 heroes of Liangshan in the epic Chinese tale the Water Margin ( Postal map spelling: Hangchow) is a Sub-provincial city located in the Yangtze River Delta in the People's Republic of China, Unexpectedly, Zhu Fu also fell ill himself and died of illness on the verge of victory over Fang La just like his brother.
