The plot is mainly of flashbacks that tell story of crew of Yamato. With this there are short reviews of what happened between scenes to provide historical information to the viewer.

Story

The movie starts in April 6th 2005, one day before 60th anniversary of sinking of the battleship Yamato. Construction The Yamato class was built after the Japanese withdrew from the Washington Naval Treaty at the Second London Conference of 1936 Makiko Uchida, adopted daughter of Petty Officer Uchida who had served on Yamato, wants to drop his ashes to the place where Yamato sunk. Unsuccessfully at first she seeks for a seaman that would take her to the place. One man accepts to travel the dangerous waters to the ship, Yamato veteran Katsumi Kamio. Kamio is suprised that, unlike he thought, he wasn't only of his friends to survive sinking of the Yamato. Ten-gō sakusen ( Kyūjitai: ja 天號作戰 Shinjitai: ja 天号作戦 "Operation Heaven One" also known as Ten-ichi-go and Operation They set to the sea, and Kamio tells his and his friend's story.

As Japan started to lose the war, recuits became younger and younger. When americans landed in Okinawa, tensions in the ship increase, until it becomes clear that Yamato is sent to Okinawa. The Battle of Okinawa, also known as Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault The crew is allowed to a last visit in Japan, meanwhile Uchida escapes hospital to join the Yamato in its suicide mission. In April 6 the Yamato and its escorts leave port. Events 46 BC - Julius Caesar defeats Caecilius Metellus Scipio and Marcus Porcius Cato in the Battle of Thapsus As the battle rages and Yamato starts to sink, Kamio loses his teammates and continues shooting aircraft alone. While seeking more ammo, Karaki gets shot. Kamio, Uchida and Moriwaki run to him but knowing that he is dead, they move to Kamio's gun. Soon Uchida gets wounded on his foot and falls off the gun. Kamio takes his place, and Moriwaki is also hit soon after. Kamio, screaming and shooting is shot in his foot. Uchida and Moriwaki throw Kamio out of the ship after order to abandon the ship. When waiting for rescue, Kamio is floating in water with his friend Nishi, who commits suicide by drowning. When the rescuing destroyer appears, Moriwaki ties him to a rope and swins back towards the sunk ship, never to return. Kamio is transported back to Japan with rest of the survivors.

Back in 2005, Kamio's boat arrives at the place where Yamato sunk. Makiko drops her father's ashes to the ocean, and they head back to Japan.
