The results aren't quite what anyone expected; that night, Tom sees the spirit of Samantha Kozac (Jennifer Morrison), a young woman who disappeared from the neighborhood a few months earlier. Jennifer Marie Morrison (born April 12, 1979) is an American Actress, model and Film producer. Tom eventually learns that he is a "receiver," a person capable of communicating with the spirit world. Jake, like his father, is also a receiver, but while Jake is calm and coherent in his conversations with Samantha, Tom is confused and agitated, lacking the ability to control his power.
Samantha, it turns out, was mentally handicapped; although a physically fully-developed teenager, she had the mental capacity of a child perhaps eight years old, along with a child's tendency to trust strangers. Mental retardation is a generalized triarchic disorder characterized by subaverage cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors with onset before the age
Convinced that Samantha was murdered and wants justice, Tom begins a search for the girl's body that puts himself and his family in grave danger, eventually learning that Adam and Kurt, two neighborhood boys, lured Samantha into the house, then killed her inadvertently during a struggle while they tried to rape her.
Later, during a confrontation at Tom and Maggie's house, Kurt and Harry (Kurt's father, and a friend of Tom's from the neighborhood) try to kill the couple, but Frank (Adam's father) shows up and kills the other two men.
