Boundaries

One of the few truly safe Conservative seats in North West England, this constituency contains pleasing rural areas, and small market towns (of which Clitheroe is the largest). North West England is one of the nine official Regions of England. Clitheroe is a town and Civil parish in the borough of Ribble Valley, Lancashire, England. The Conservatives actually lost the seat in the 1990's in a by-election during a period of mid-term unpopularity to the Lib Dems, who have a respectable presence on the local council, but it has since returned safely to the Conservative fold. Labour can usually only have one ward in their favour here: Edisford and Low Moor.

Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Lancashire, the Boundary Commission for England created a new seat of Wyre and Preston North. Lancashire is a non-metropolitan county of historic origin in the North West of England, bounded to the west by the Irish Sea Wyre and Preston North is to be a Constituency in the United Kingdom House of Commons. This creation caused major changes to neighbouring seats, including Ribble Valley.

As the Prestonian wards to the east of the existing Ribble Valley seat are now moved elsewhere, this seat has taken electoral wards from the south of the River Ribble for the first time. The River Ribble is a river that runs through North Yorkshire and Lancashire, in the North of England. This brings a substantial urban character to the largely farming and rural mix of the existing seat.

The entire district of Ribble Valley is attached to ten wards from South Ribble for the creation of this new seat. Ribble Valley is a local government district with Borough status within the Non-metropolitan county of Lancashire, England (although South Ribble is a Non-metropolitan district and Borough of Lancashire, England. No name change was suggested.
