Porto Novo (Portuguese for “new port”) is the westernmost municipality in Cape Verde and all of Africa but not the mainland. The plain area which are consists of farmlands cover the area round Porto Novo, the mountains cover the northern, western and the central parts and some are in valley areas. Much of the municipality is grassy or bushy, a few forests cover the mountain area while farmlands are in the plain around Porto Novo and in valley areas.
Its main economy are businesses in Porto Novo and tourism, it is followed by agriculture which is one of the main industry.
