In 1964, he was drafted in the second round by the Redskins. He was named to the All-NFL first team his rookie season by leading the league in interceptions with twelve. Krause came in second for Rookie of the Year voting. He intercepted 28 passes during his four years with the club. In 1968, he was traded to the Vikings, for whom he played until he retired after the 1979 season. During that time, he was one of the few players to play in all four of the Vikings Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl IV, Super Bowl VIII, Super Bowl IX, Super Bowl XI).
