The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the riverbanks that would later become the city of Omaha in 1804, and met on Council Bluff at a point about 20 miles (30 km) north of present-day Omaha, at which point they met with the Otoe. Fort Atkinson was the first United States Army post to be established west of the Missouri River in the United States. [17] Immediately south of that area several outposts were built in succeeding years, including Fort Lisa in 1806;[18] Fort Atkinson in 1819;[19] and Cabanne's Trading Post, built in 1822.
