Extension projects

Despite the State of Illinois's current budget crisis, Metra is implementing vigorous expansion in the coming years. The State of Illinois ( roughly ill-i-NOY is a state of the United States of America, the 21st to be admitted to the Union. Some of this expansion has already been realized: the Union Pacific/West line has been extended from Geneva, Illinois through La Fox to Elburn, and the Southwest Service line has been extended from Orland Park to Manhattan. Geneva is a suburb of Chicago located in extreme eastern Kane County Illinois. Elburn is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4751 as of 2006 Orland Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States; it also extends slightly into Will County. Manhattan is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States. [2] Metra is also in the process of extending the McHenry branch of the Union Pacific/Northwest into Johnsburg. McHenry is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. Johnsburg is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. [3]

Metra is also planning to create new rail services as well, namely the SouthEast Service line from downtown Chicago to Crete[4] as well as Metra's first entirely intra-suburban commuter line, the Suburban Transit Access Route, or "STAR" Line, which would operate between Joliet and O'Hare Airport, linking together Metra lines in the western suburbs. The SouthEast Service is a proposed Commuter rail line which would be provided and operated by Metra in Chicago Illinois, USA, and its surrounding Crete is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7346 at the 2000 census The Suburban Transit Access Route is a railway project in outer suburban Chicago Illinois, USA. Joliet is a city in Will county in the US state of Illinois, located 40 miles southwest of Chicago. [5] In 2010, Metra hopes to extend the Union Pacific/North Line to Milwaukee. The Union Pacific/North ( UP-N) is a Commuter rail line in the Chicago metropolitan area that runs between Chicago and Waukegan Illinois Stops would include Milwaukee, Cudahy, South Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Caledonia, Racine, and Somers. South Milwaukee is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. Caledonia is the Latin name given by the Roman Empire to a northern area of the island of Great Britain.

Fare structure

Metra has a zone-based fare structure. Fares are determined by the number of zones passed through on a trip. The zones are designated by letters and range from A (downtown stations and termini) to M. Harvard on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line is the only station located in the M zone, and no stations are located in the L zone. Harvard is a station on Metra 's Union Pacific/Northwest Line located in Harvard Illinois. The Union Pacific/Northwest ( UP-NW) is a Commuter rail line provided by Metra and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad in Chicago Illinois

Comparisons with other train infrastructures

Metra is perhaps the worst mapped train system of any metropolis. Examples include the inability to get from O'Hare to downtown and connect with anything else. Try telling a tourist how to get from McCormick Place to O'Hare! Why is the "L" not connected to the mainline train stations? Why are they still running fossil fuel, diesel locomotives? Compare our Metra train system to, for example, those of London and Paris, and it's a disgrace. Then again, compare Amtrak to the European TGV, and . . .
