Lamu District is a district of Kenya's Coast Province. The provinces of Kenya are subdivided into 71 districts ( Wilaya) The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north Somalia to the northeast Tanzania to the south Coast Province of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean, is one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi. Its district headquarters is Lamu town. Lamu town is the largest town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. The district covers a strip of northeastern coastal mainland and the Lamu Archipelago. The Lamu Archipelago is located in the Indian Ocean close to the northern coast of Kenya, to which it belongs Lamu District has a population of 72,686 and its land area is 6,167 sq Kilometres [1].
There are extensive mangrove forests in the area. Mangroves (generally are Trees and Shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the Tropics and Subtropics.
Lamu district has only one local authority, Lamu county council. The district has two constituencies: Lamu west and Lamu east.
