Seondeok served under King Hyegong in the position of sangdaedeung. Hyegong of Silla (756-780 r 765-780 was the 36th ruler of the Korean kingdom of Silla. Sangdaedeung 上大等 (translated as Extraordinary Rank One was an office of the Silla state When the rebellion of Kim Ji-jeong broke out in 780, he led the royal forces against the rebels. However, the rebels stormed the palace and slew the king, and Seondeok was obliged to take the throne for himself.

After his death in 785, Seondeok was cremated and his ashes scattered on the Sea of Japan (East Sea). The Sea of Japan is a Marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean, bordered by Japan, Korea, North Korea and Russia Seondeok's successor was King Wonseong.
