After practising private law for a number of years, he was elected to represent Scarborough East in 1997 and reelected in 2000. Scarborough East was a Canadian electoral district represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1968 to 2003 and was represented in the Legislative Assembly He was elected to represent the riding of Scarborough—Guildwood in 2004.
