Grundy was the home of the predecessor to the Food City Stores when Jack Smith opened a Piggly Wiggly franchise in 1955. Grundy is home to the Appalachian School of Law, which opened in 1997, and the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy, which opened in August of 2005. A census is the procedure of acquiring information about every member of a given population The population density was 219.
