Gavar is a lovely city near Lake Sevan in the Armenian highlands. Lake Sevan (Սևանա լիճ is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world The city is home to 36,400 people[1] but much of the Soviet era infrastructure has failed and the industrial capacity has floundered. However, the local economy is improving at a slow rate. Some business people are returning to Gavar from abroad and there is hope the new mayor will greatly improve the city's public works.

The city is home to Gavar Special School which is the only school for mentally and physically handicapped children in the region. Gavar Special School was founded in 1976 for the Gegharkunik region of the Republic of Armenia. The Gavar Special School is currently carrying out steps to improve itself so it can become the premier school for special children in Armenia. The school is blessed to have many partners that can be found on its website.

Gavar does have a city portal which is used by many people outside of Gavar. The name of the portal is Kyavar. com as the locals pronounce the name of the city with a "ky" sound instead of a "g" sound at the beginning of the name.
