History

Güstrow was first mentioned in 1228. It is said to be founded by a grandson of Henry the Lion. Henry the Lion ( German: Heinrich der Löwe; 1129 &ndash 6 August 1195) was a member of the Guelph dynasty and Duke of Saxony Güstrow became a summer residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg in the 14th century. Mecklenburg ( Low German: Mekelnborg) is a region in northern Germany comprising the western and larger part of the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern After the division of Mecklenburg (1621) it became the capital of the small duchy of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. A duchy is a territory fief, or domain ruled by a Duke or Duchess. Mecklenburg-Güstrow was a North German state that existed on three separate occasions ruled by the House of Mecklenburg. In 1695 the last duke of Mecklenburg-Güstrow died, and the duchy ceased to exist. Güstrow became a part of the duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

The famous sculptor Ernst Barlach lived in Güstrow from 1910 to his death in 1938.
