Biography

Mitchell was born in Hereford, Texas. Hereford is a city in Deaf Smith County, Texas, United States. [1] He was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. Mitchell was selected to be an astronaut in 1966 and was seconded from the Navy to NASA. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA, ˈnæsə is an agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation's public space program He was backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 10 and flew (again as LM pilot) on Apollo 14. Together with Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard he holds the record for the longest ever moonwalk (9 hours and 17 minutes) and travelled further on the surface than anyone else, up to that landing. Mitchell is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and carried one of the order's badges to the moon; it is now kept at his home chapter of Kappa Sigma at Carnegie Mellon University.
