The city of Arboga is known to have existed as a town since the late 1200s but the area has been inhabitated since the around the 900s. The name (originally Arbugæ) consists of the two words "Ar" which in ancient Swedish means river and bughi which means "bend" and which together has the meaning River bend. The first parliament of Sweden (Riksdag) was held in the city in 1435.
