The city of Arboga is known to have existed as a town since the late 1200s but the area has been inhabitated since the around the 900s. The name (originally Arbugæ) consists of the two words "Ar" which in ancient Swedish means river and bughi which means "bend" and which together has the meaning River bend. The first parliament of Sweden (Riksdag) was held in the city in 1435. The Riksdag is the official Swedish term of the Parliament of Sweden and the Parliament of Finland (in Finland alongside The city has a population of 10,600 (2005).
Today the city is a communication centre since highways E18 and E20 merge here and that the two railways Mälarbanan and Svealandsbanan, between Stockholm and Hallsberg also merges in the city.
